I jinxed myself

I should have never posted about feeling refreshed. I jinxed myself! Monday afternoon I started having the sniffles and a dry cough. By Tuesday, I was feeling worse so I stayed home, drank lots of hot tea, rested, tried to find something good on TV to watch (daytime TV is terrible by the way) and found nothing, so I played with my new smart phone and took the picture below with it. Yes, I have finally upgraded from my 7yr old Razr. Can I just tell you that I've only owned two cellphones EVER. I've never broken, lost, or had to replace one. Paul's exact words 'That's some ROI on a cellphone'. Anyway, I hope you steer clear of this nasty summer cold that seems to be going around. Hopefully I can shake this thing in the next couple of days. 'Til then...more fluids and rest.

refreshed

I'm feeling pretty refreshed right now and I haven't felt like that in quite a while. I didn't even have a long weekend!?!?
We started Saturday off with some Starbucks and Bruegger's Bagels and then I took Paul inside the Fresh Market for his first time. We LOVE their almond pillow cookies so we picked up a few. Then we played in the pool and ate lunch by the lake with Ashley, Daniel and Leighton. Here are a few pictures from the day.

After playing in the sun, Paul and I ran a few errands and then spent the remainder of the afternoon reading. I must say, I don't really consider myself much of a reader. I just don't make the time for it, but Paul finished a book that his brother gave him and he just kept talking about it at dinner on Monday night so I decided I would read it too. I read about half of it during the week and finished it up on Saturday. It was a very enlightening and encouraging book. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years is the name of the book and the author is Donald Miller. You may have already read it or read one of his other books, Blue Like Jazz. In the book, Don tells of how his life was meaningless and he compares 'life' to a 'story' and no one ever likes a meaningless story. I don't really want to tell you anything else about the book just in case you haven't read it, but it reminded me that I devote my time and energy to so many things that are just not meaningful, but I think they will make my life better. I want to make a beautiful and meaningful 'story'. This book was a great reminder of that for me. Below is a quote from the book.

I've lived some good stories now, and those stories have improved the quality of my life. But I've also let go of the idea things will ever be made perfect, at least while I'm walking around on this planet. I've let go of the idea that this life has a climax...
When you stop expecting people to be perfect, you can like them for who they are. And when you stop expecting material possessions to complete you, you'd be surprised at how much pleasure you get in material possessions. And when you stop expecting God to end all your troubles, you'd be surprised how much you like spending time with God. - Don

Check it out and let me know what you think. I hope your weekend was a relaxing and enjoyable one. Ahhh, I feel refreshed and ready for the week!

Okay, and now for my guilty pleasure.... Mad Men

a few things...

Well, I have a few things to tell you about. First off, sorry for the lack of posts. Summer is just flying by and Paul and I are trying to savor what is left of it. We're trying to be better about enjoying summer fun activities during the week and not just on the weekends. Monday night we enjoyed Charlotte Restaurant Week. If you live near the area and have never been to one of the participating restaurants, you definitely should. It's a great opportunity to visit some of our higher-end restaurants for half the price. Visit this website to see which restaurants are participating. It ends this Sunday.

Next, do you remember this post about Found Studio? Well Found Studio's website went 'live' this week. You HAVE to check out the new website!
This photo was stolen from the Found Studio website:)

I hope your week is going well so far. You've almost made it to Friday!

this cracks me up

You may have already heard about the website Catalog Living in the blog world, but if you haven't you have to check out this blog. I found out about it through this blog. Check out Catalog Living here. It cracks me up! They make fun of how catalogs like Pottery Barn, West Elm, etc... stage their rooms.

While Gary and Elaine were in the kitchen getting popcorn, the brave yellow sweater attempted its escape.

sweet prayers

Last night after a short, but difficult battle with leukemia, Paul's grandma went home to be with the Lord. She was such a special lady and we will miss her dearly. We feel comfort though in knowing that we WILL see her again someday. We would appreciate your prayers, specifically for Paul's mom, aunt and uncle as they are missing their mother tonight.

sister-in-love shower

On Saturday, I helped throw a family wedding shower for my soon-to-be sister in law. I love throwing showers. It's a lot of work, but so much fun too!
The shower was at 10a.m. so we enjoyed fresh fruit, a variety of pastries and ham, cheese and spinach strata. Everyone asked where I got the recipe. I got it from here. It's super easy and delicious. We also served key lime, chocolate, and white chocolate raspberry cupcakes from SweetCakes.

We don't look anything alike do we?? I'm so lucky to inherit such a wonderful sister-in-law. I can't wait to make many more memories together both as Mrs. Summerville. Congratulations and Happy Wedding Danielle!

In case you were wondering, I followed these easy instructions to make the pom poms.

I hope your weekend was a good one!

so many colors...

...of raffia! You know this makes me happy. I walked past this window last weekend in Blowing Rock and just had to take a picture.

p.s. - I don't know why it looks like I have on a midriff flag top in the window. I promise that's not what I have on:)

4th of July weekend fun

Can you believe that we have already celebrated the 4th of July? The summer is just flying by. For the past few years, we have spent the 4th up in the mountains. We just love it and it's such a nice break from the heat. The mornings and evenings or slightly cool and during the day is a perfect 80 degrees. We had such a great weekend. We started Saturday morning off with homemade waffles and topped them off with festive red and blue berries and a little syrup.
Then we dressed up Riley (my sister's dog) and Leighton for the neighborhood parade. There were lots of children and pets in the parade. It was really cute. After the parade, we enjoyed delicious Woodlands BBQ. It's a 'must stop' restaurant if you are ever in Blowing Rock.
Leighton loved her new ride.
Later that evening we enjoyed burgers and bluegrass music at Chetola and then headed to the Blowing Rock Country Club for fireworks.
We relaxed the remainder of the weekend and enjoyed the scenery, playing games and eating good food.
Oh, and we played in the park some too. What a great weekend!
