I know most folks do not care to read birth stories, but I am going to do my best to document Graham's first year just as I did Georgia's so it is only appropriate that it includes his birthday!
I thought for sure this would be an uneventful, scheduled c-section story, but there was a little episode that made it more memorable. We were scheduled to have the c-section at 1pm so obviously we had to arrive at the hospital about 2 hours before. I got changed and then spoke to my nurse as soon as we arrived. By noon we were just killing time in the room until 1pm. My doctor finished up his clinic early that day and popped in around 12:15 and said he was ready if I was ready so Paul put his scrubs on, we spoke to our parents briefly and then walked ourselves down to the OR.
I must say, I was way more nervous this time around about the c-section. I have just become more anxious since becoming a mom. I think it would have been mentally easier if things would have just happened naturally. Anyway, once we got to the OR, Paul had to sit outside while I was prepped for surgery. It was so strange being fully alert this time. I talked to everyone in the room and could even hear a Taylor Swift song playing in the background. Once my doctor came in things progressed fairly quickly. There was a lot more tugging and pulling involved than I remembered last time. I had the shakes pretty bad again this time, but was still able to carry on conversations with everyone. I remember hearing the nurse say 'We are about to have a baby folks' and then I heard Graham's sweet little cry. He was born at 1:03pm. Paul was able to snap a few pictures of him once they laid him down to weigh him (7lbs 8oz - 20in'). That's when things got interesting.
After Paul got some pictures of Graham he came back over to check on me while they were stitching me up. I said, 'Paul, you don't look good. You are turning green'. The nurse also agreed. Paul's eyes started rolling back in his head. I told the nurse he needed help. Next thing I know, they are calling for back up - " Dad down in OR 3, we need some help in here". He didn't fully pass out, but was put on a bed and rolled into the recovery area. Once I was stitched up, I met Paul in the recovery area. I jokingly thanked him for adding some spice to Graham's birth story.
Daddy is feeling much better now.
I was able to hold Graham as soon as I got to the recovery area which was perfect. I wasn't able to do that with Georgia so I really enjoyed this special time with him. About two hours later we were sent to our room for the long stay.
Later that night, our parents brought Georgia to the hospital to meet Graham. She was smitten and so proud of him. I think she was a little worried about me. She kept asking where my doctor was.
We got her a 'big sister' gift. Graham gave her the Elsa doll and Paul and I gave her the Anna doll. She was so excited!
Georgia came to visit every day. It made my heart so happy to see her, especially to see her with Graham.
We have had an army of help as we have been adjusting as a family of four. A big thanks to our parents who took care of Georgia, prepared meals, did laundry, cleaned, etc...
Life as a family of four is busy and a bit chaotic, but in a good way. It is a sweet life that we would not trade for anything. Happy Birthday Graham Carter Summerville!
